Gazpromneft-Bitumen Materials’ sales of high-tech bitumens up 22% in 2019

Sales of polymer-bitumen binders (PBBs) and bitumen derivatives at Gazpromneft-Bitumen Materials (operator of the Gazprom Neft bitumens business) reached 247,000 tonnes in 2019, a 22% increase year-on-year. Gazprom Neft’s total annual sales of bitumen materials reached more than 2.5 million tonnes.

The company’s higher PBB deliveries in 2019 were the result of highways-infrastructure development projects in Russia, including for the national “Safe and High-Quality Roads” project, as well as roadbuilding through public—private partnerships (PPPs). The largest project on which Gazprom Neft bitumen projects were used was in building the M-11 Neva federal high-speed highway between Moscow and St Petersburg, with the company’s Science and Technology Centre in Ryazan developing bespoke asphalt and cement mixes adapted to that highway’s specific climatic conditions and traffic loads. Gazprom Neft supplied a total 100,000 tonnes of base bitumen, more than 35,000 tonnes of modified binders, and 70,000 meters of modified-bitumen joining tape for construction of various sections of the M-11 over a period of three years.

As well as supplying high-tech bitumens to the domestic Russian market, the company also supplies bitumen materials on major international projects — one notable international infrastructure development project on which Gazprom Neft products have been used being the construction of the Bi-Oceanic Corridor in Latin America.* PBB formulations for this highway were developed by specialists at the company’s Science and Technology Centre in 2019, in line with the region’s high air temperatures, tropical humidity and mountainous terrain.

“Expert knowledge, experience, and a powerful research base mean we can get involved in major roadbuilding projects, offering the most effective solutions. Multiple usage of enhanced-performance Gazprom Neft binders is ensuring road coverings’ quality and durability under current highways’ actual usage conditions, in various regions. Our 2019 results testify to the good market response to our offerings. We will continue paying particular attention to the high-tech products sector in 2020, both on the Russian and the international markets.”

Notes for editors

Gazpromneft Bitumen Materials is a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft, specialising in the production and sale of bitumen products. The company currently holds a leading position on the Russian bitumens market, as well as being one of the world’s top-10 bitumen producers.

The company’s key production facilities are based in the Moscow, Omsk, Yaroslavl, Smolensk, Rostov and Ryazan Oblasts, as well as in Serbia and Kazakhstan. The company produces more than 180 branded road, construction and roofing bitumens, as well as polymer-modified bitumens (PMBs) and binders (specifically G-Way Styrelf), and a range of bitumen derivatives (mastic compounds, sealants, bridging tapes and more). The company is constantly developing new formulations, and further improving technology in the production of innovative binders.

* The Bi-Oceanic corridor is a transcontinental transport corridor in Latin America, intended to connect the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The new highway will become an alternative to current sea routes, significantly reducing cargo transportation times. The project envisages the construction of a railway line and a highway through Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and Peru, with a total length of 3,000 kilometres. The project is expected to run to 2022.
