American astronaut, Jerry Ross, answers a vital question about debris in outer space.

Talking to ET Panache about whether humans are littering outer space with debris, Ross said, “Well, we can’t stop exploring space, but we certainly need to be smarter about how we do it. So, we must design our spacecrafts and rockets in a way that we don’t generate additional debris. And once we have launched a satellite, we ought to deorbit the rocket booster immediately so that it doesn’t explode and cause additional debris and things like that.

We shouldn’t be like the Chinese, who blew up their satellite on purpose and created a tremendous amount of satellite debris. We have to understand that there are certain altitudes that we can do space flights in safely, and there are some altitudes where we may not be able to do flights as safely because that’s where some of the concentration of debris is.”
