Police have launched an urgent appeal to trace a woman in a dressing gown who was reportedly dragged down a street in Rotherham.

It has been alleged that the woman was seen being dragged along Fitzwilliam Road by a man who was with five or six other men at the time.

In a statement to South Yorkshire Live, South Yorkshire Police said: "Detectives in Rotherham are appealing for information after reports that a woman was pulled along Fitzwilliam road by a man on Tuesday (May 26).

"It is reported that at around 2.42am, a woman was seen being pulled down Fitzwilliam Road, near to the junction of Denman Street by a man, who was with 5-6 other men."

The woman is described as being Eastern European, around 28-years-old, with long blonde hair and dark roots.

Police said she was believed to be wearing a long, fluffy, maroon coloured dressing gown tied in the middle.

They are now appealing directly to the woman "as a matter of urgency", to make sure that she is okay.

Detective inspector Joanne Kemp said: "We are still looking in to the circumstances surrounding this incident.

"Officers have been reviewing all nearby CCTV footage and conducting door to door enquiries on the street.

"Our first priority is to carry out a welfare check on the woman involved and I would like to directly appeal to her to get in touch, please contact police as a matter of urgency to let us know you are ok.

"Officers have checked all local hospitals and continue to carry out Automatic Number Plate Recognition work for any cars that were in the area at the time."

Anyone who witnessed the suspected assault, or who may have information, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 109 of May 26.
