The new High Tech School, being built in Secaucus, will be the gem of high schools in Hudson County, Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said after touring the facility this week.

The complex -- a three-story hub with classrooms, an underground parking garage, administrative offices, cafeteria, gymnasium, a 400-seat theater and three extensions -- is expected to be open in time for the 2018-19 school year.

The total cost of the project, part of the Hudson County Schools of Technology (HCST), is $160 million. The high school is currently located in North Bergen.

Gonnelli, other Secaucus officials and HCST administrators toured the construction site Wednesday.

"It is absolutely amazing, it truly is fantastic," said Hudson County Schools of Technology Superintendent Frank Gargiulo. "The progress they have made since the last time I was here eight weeks ago is astonishing. The building is starting to shape up really well, I'm very impressed."

Construction for the state-of-the-art, 340,000-square-feet school began in May of 2016. The school will be home to four academies focusing on vocational training, architecture and engineering, applied sciences and the performing arts.

"The new High Tech High School will be the highlight of high schools in the whole country," Gonnelli said. "We are very happy that Secaucus will be the next home of this beautiful school, everyone involved has done an amazing job to make this a reality and we couldn't be more excited."
