Uzbekistan plans to increase the share of information and communication technologies in the gross domestic product (GDP) to 5 percent.

This was announced by the director of Mirzo Ulugbek Innovation Center (MUIC), Farhad Ibrahimov, on December 5.

“Our goal is to bring the share of the IT sector in GDP, which now stands at 2 percent, up to 5 percent by 2020. To do this, we have certain requirements that need to be met,” the head of the center said.

It is necessary to pay attention to education at this stage most of all for the development of the industry, according to Ibrahimov.

“We need to invest all our resources in education. And only after that we will go through further steps to attract international companies and create local companies. Our center in the near future will become one of the most developing and progressive, and will also be the locomotive of the entire industry. We hope that we will be able to turn our direction into the leading one and show how effectively to export our own intellectual abilities. Thus, we will be able to win success in the international arena and improve the state of the economy by attracting the same investment,” he stressed.

MUIC was created in accordance with the presidential decree of June 30, 2017 and operates on the principle of extraterritoriality throughout the entire country to create the most favorable conditions for the development of production of ICT products and services. The service life of the innovation center is 10 years with the possibility of a subsequent extension.
